A Bit of Touchup

I decided to update the first bench I built. It was getting old anyways. Gosh, it was at least 2 1/2 months old. I had learned so much building the last five benchest, and I wanted to incorporate some of that detail into my first bench.

I removed the screws holding the top bar on and filled them with epoxy. The epoxy filled in all the hollows and firmly glued it to the support posts. The seat and back was given a thorough sanding to level them and make them easier to slide across. The screw holes in the seat and armrest were also filled with epoxy. It is a must that I protect the old butt from splinters. Brenda and I then applied several coats of Defy Ultra Semi-Transparent Wood Stain, Natural Pine. The first layer seals the wood and the second layer gave it a satin sheen. Now, it almost looks like a new bench.

This is the bench in its original state. it was plain with no finish. I was just going to let it weather and turn gray.

This is the finished product after staining. It is now our yard bench as I built another to use on the deck. I have severe spinal stenosis and need somewhere to stop and rest as I walk around the yard. Brenda and I can sit here with the furry kids and watch the world roll by.
